Pastrix: The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“With a universe this vast and unknowable, what are the odds that this story of Jesus is true? Come on, Nadia. It’s a fucking fairy tale.”
On Christmas Eve my Pastor looked at me, handed me this book (Pastrix: The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint by Nadia Bolz-Weber) and just said “I don’t care much for her language but read this.”

This is the only book I have read in less than three days, it usually takes me three months, and my Pastor was right. This book is colorful to say the least, and considering I am a foul mouthed New Yorker who uses f-bombs and bit*hes in my daily vocabulary (even around Church folk) I was surprised by Nadia’s candor but fell in love with her truth and understanding of the Gospel.

It was great to hear about this Lutheran Pastor, who struggles with the state of humanity, and is reminded constantly that we must love one another not because someone is telling her so, not because a book is telling her so, but because life is telling her so. It was refreshing and enlightening to know that even pastors can struggle outwardly - with faith, with life, with humanity - and find the courage and strength to carry on their mission of peace and love.

It was reported that Mother Teresa lived and practiced for more than 50 years without feeling the love of God, living in the darkness of the soul (Come Be My Light: The Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta). Yet she persevered in her mission in silence of her own ailment. A beautiful gift to the world but it came at a horrible price to her life here on earth. What Nadia Bolz Weber has done here is expose her questions, doubts, and struggles out in the open and the result has been a beautiful light of the soul.

Perfect just after Christmas and entering in the New Year. A recommended read for Christians and non-Christians alike, whatever you believe regarding a higher power - we can all learn a thing or two about loving thy neighbor.
